John Brennan former head of the CIA has labelled President Trump despicable after giving a “self-serving” speech in front of the wall of stars, a memorial for fallen CIA officers.
One of his aids, Nick Shapiro told NBC, “Former CIA Director Brennan is deeply saddened and angered at Donald Trump’s despicable display of self-aggrandizement in front of CIA’s Memorial Wall of Agency heroes.”
For weeks President Trump has been feuding with America’s intelligence services. His purpose of the visit was to reassure the CIA that they were on the same team.
Trump’s Feud with U.S. Intelligence
The feud began over Russia, it then moved on to the “Dirty Dossier” on Donald Trump, which he holds the intelligence services accountable for leaking it to the press. Trump accused them of using Nazi-style tactics, which did not go down well with the likes of Brennan.
During the speech, President Trump expressed support for the CIA but denounced the media for their coverage of the inauguration, saying, “I have a running war with the media. They are among the most dishonest people on earth. They made it sound like I had a feud with the intelligence people.”
This brought about criticism such as those voiced by Brennan. Other presidents have spoken about the sacrifice CIA officers have made for their country.
However, now all CIA officers felt the same way about the speech. One officer told NBC, “This is the part the media doesn’t get – this is not like any other president. The critics hate this president so much they cannot get past it. The truth of the visit was in the face to face meetings – people were happy to talk to him. That assuaged a lot of concerns and a lot of anxiety.”
At CIA headquarters he again spoke of the dishonest media, misreporting how many people were there to watch his inauguration.
